Reached by descending a long flight of stairs, the small chamber contains niches for 26 marble sepulchres containing royal remains, with the first interment being that of Charles V, Holy RomanEmperor. His remains were brought here from the Monastery of Yuste, where he had retired and died in 1558. His son, Philip II, one-time husband of Mary Tudor, died at his palace of El Escorial and is interred in the marble sarcophagus beneath his father. However, you might be puzzled as to how all the tombs are the same size – surely not one size fits all?! Well, that is because, close by, is the El Pudridero, or ‘rotting room’, where bodies are left in their coffins for at least 30 years so that they are reduced to bone. These remains are then placed in a small wooden urn and ultimately deposited in their marble chests – morbid, but very neat and tidy!
