Bobby began his career after being selected in the Rule 5 draft by the Chicago White Sox in the 1985-86 summer. At the start of the 1986 season, he made his debut. On December 2, 1991, he signed a 5-year, $29 million contract with the New York Mets, making him the highest-paid player in the National League.

After helping the Marlins win the 1997 World Series, Bobby was re-signed by the Florida Marlins for the 1996 season.
